“It was some of the greenest grass we had seen in weeks”
Wow! What a place. We had the best time checking out what Cloncurry had to offer. We were told that a lot of travellers bypass this amazing spot to get to Mt Isa 😲 which is crazy to hear. This is a hidden gem that travellers are missing!
We stayed at the Cloncurry Oasis Caravan Park in town. And it definitely lived up to its name, Oasis. 🌴 It was some of the greenest grass we had seen in weeks, shady trees to keep cool under and of course, a swimming pool! Paradise.
We went to explore the local uranium mine and town, Mary Kathleen, that is now entirely abandoned. It was amazing to see where everything once worked, plus the huge hole in the ground itself was incredible to see!
Cloncurry and the surrounds are known for the countless mines in the area, they have self guided trails to some of the really old mines too. The Balara Mining Heritage Trail was interesting and we had a great time hitting some proper 4x4 tracks along the way, it was a lot of fun. The highlight of this trail is the Hightville Tunnel, a very old mining tunnel you can walk through from one side to the other.
Also in the area we managed to checkout some silo art which is located just outside of town. Very cool paintings plus a great view over the whole town. Just around the corner from there is one of the most amazing dams we have seen yet. Chinaman Creek Dam! Very scenic and just absolutely beautiful. 🥰
Definitely recommend stopping in to Cloncurry on your way out west, it’s a great town that has lots to offer. We stayed 4 nights, but could of stayed a lot longer.
