“Kununurra is the second youngest town in WA”
One of the most iconic landmarks in Kununurra, the Diversion Dam, built to contain the flow of water from Lake Argyle.
It was designed to divert and regulate the flow of water from the Ord River into the Ord Irrigation area. The dam consists of 20 radial gates mounted within a concrete framework & spillway structure. The water is gravity fed into channels that service the area to the north of the town and pumped into the Packsaddle Plains area to the south. You can cross this dam when you drive on the Victoria Highway.
It’s a very cool sight to see and many of the locals use this area as a fishing location. The dam also runs down to the famous Ivanhoe Crossing where you can find some of the biggest and best Barramundi fishing.
It’s been very interesting hanging around Kununurra and learn about all the things that we may not have on a short visit. So much to take in here, definitely not a place to use as a stop over but one to take some time to embrace.
